Giving a Reason
Giving a reason คือ การให้เหตุผล การให้เหตุผลมีวัตถุประสงค์หลักในการให้คำอธิบายและขยายความเพื่อให้เกิดความชัดเจนถึงเหตุผลของผู้พูดในสถานการณ์ต่างๆ การให้เหตุผลมีสองประเภท คือการให้เหตุผลโดยใช้ภาษาที่เป็นทางการ และภาษาที่ไม่เป็นทางการ (Informal) ผู้พูดจะเลือกใช้การอให้เหตุผลแบบใดก็ได้แล้วแต่ความประสงค์
1.การให้เหตุผลแบบเป็นทางการ (Formal conversation)
ประโยคหรือสำนวนที่ใช้ในการให้เหตุผลแบบเป็นทางการที่มักพบบ่อยๆ เช่น If I could explain ………….,The main reason is that …………… ,My reason is that …. เป็นต้น
If I could explain ………….
John: Tell me why you are late.
Mary: If I could explain it, it would be the problem of my car.
The main reason is that ……………
Kim: Why do you like drinking tea ?
David:The main reason is that it is very good for my health.
My reason is that ….
Jessica: I want to know why you cannot join us.
Carl: My reason is that I have to take care of my grandparents.
2.การให้เหตุผลแบบไม่เป็นทางการ (Informal conversation)
ประโยค วลีหรือสำนวนที่ใช้ในการให้เหตุผลแบบไม่เป็นทางการที่มักพบบ่อยๆ เช่น Because, This is because….,It is because …….,The simple reason is that ……….,The point is ………..,Well, the thing is …………. เป็นต้น

Ann: Why do you like to get up in the early morning ?
Tim: Because I want to get fresh air and exercise.
This is because….
Adam: Explain to me why you like to play tennis.
Jim: This is because I am skillful in hitting tennis balls.
It is because …….
John: Tell my why you like this film.
James: It is because I like the hero.
The simple reason is that ………..
Kim: Why do you go shopping ?
Henry: The simple reason is that I enjoy it.
The point is ………..
Mike: I wonder why we have to go together.
Jesse: The point is that the company can provide only a car for us.
Well, the thing is ………….
Julie: Why do you plan to take vacation next month ?
Carl: Well, the thing is that my mom will be with me next month.
