Past Simple Tense
Past Simple Tense คือเหตุการณ์ในอดีตที่เกิดขึ้นและสิ้นสุดไปแล้วในอดีต
รูปแบบ Subject + V.2* + Object หรือส่วนขยาย
Adverbs of Time ที่บอกเวลาในอดีต ได้แก่

| last week | สัปดาห์ที่แล้ว |
| last month | เดือนที่แล้ว |
| last year | ปีที่แล้ว |

| the day before yesterday | เมื่อวานซืนนี้ |
| in 2000 | ในปี 2000 |
| this morning | เมื่อเช้านี้ |
* หมายเหตุ V.2 คือ กริยาเติม “d” หรือ “ed” ในกรณีเป็นกริยาปกติ (Regular Verb) เช่น walk, watch เป็นต้น และเป็นกริยาช่องที่ 2 ในกรณีเป็นกริยาไม่ปกติ (Irregular Verb) เช่น run-ran, take-took เป็นต้น
คำกริยาช่องที่ 2 (Past Form) มี 3 แบบคือ
1. คำกริยาที่เติม –d หรือ –ed เรียกว่า Regular verb (กริยาปกติ)
1.1 โดยปกติคำกริยาทั่วไปจะเติม –ed ท้ายคำกริยาเช่น
walk - walked
jump - jumped
clean - cleaned
talk - talked
1.2 คำกริยาช่องที่ 1 ที่ลงท้ายด้วย e ให้เติม –d เช่น
like - liked
live - lived
smile - smiled
1.3 คำกริยาช่องที่ 1 ที่ลงท้ายด้วย y ให้เปลี่ยน y เป็น i แล้วเติม -ed เช่น
study - studied
cry - cried
1.4 คำกริยาช่องที่ 1 ที่ลงท้ายด้วย y และหน้า y เป็นสระ (a, e, i, o, u) ให้เติม -ed เช่น
play - played
enjoy - enjoyed
obey - obeyed
1.5 คำกริยาช่องที่ 1 ที่มีสระตัวเดียว ตัวสะกดตัวเดียวและออกเสียงสั้น ให้เพิ่มตัวสะกดตัวท้ายอีกหนึ่งตัวแล้วจึงเติม -ed เช่น
stop - stopped
beg - begged
rub - rubbed
1.6 คำกริยาช่องที่ 1 ที่มีลงท้ายด้วย l ให้เพิ่ม l อีกหนึ่งตัวแล้วจึงเติม -ed เช่น
control - controlled
travel - travelled
1.7 คำกริยาช่องที่ 1 ที่มี 2 พยางค์และออกเสียงหนัก (stress) ที่พยางค์หลัง ให้เติมตัวสะกดตัวท้ายเพิ่มอีก 1 ตัว ก่อนเติม -ed เช่น
permit - permitted
occur - occurred
2. คำกริยาที่เปลี่ยนรูป เรียกว่า Irregular verb (กริยาอปกติ)
คือ คำกริยาที่เมื่อทำให้เป็นกริยาช่องที่ 2 แล้วจะเปลี่ยนรูปไปจากเดิมหรืออาจจะเปลี่ยนสระภายในคำเดิม เช่น
go - went
eat - ate
get - got
drink - drank
3 คำกริยาที่ไม่เปลี่ยนรูป
คือรูปจะคงที่และได้รูปเดียวกันทั้งกริยาช่องที่ 1 และกริยาช่องที่ 2 เช่น
cut - cut
put - put
hit - hit
let - let
hurt - hurt

การทำประโยคบอกเล่าให้เป็นประโยคปฏิเสธใน Past Simple Tense
1. ประโยคบอกเล่าที่มี verb to be สามารถทำให้เป็นประโยคปฏิเสธได้โดยการเติม not หลัง verb to be ทันที

2. ประโยคบอกเล่าที่มี had หรือคำกริยาช่องที่ 2 สามารถทำให้เป็นประโยคปฏิเสธได้โดยใช้ did not (didn’t) วางระหว่างประธานและกริยาแท้ และกริยาแท้ต้องเปลี่ยนจาก had เป็น have หรือกริยาที่ไม่มี to (Infinitive without to)

การทำประโยคบอกเล่าให้เป็นประโยคคำถามใน Past Simple Tense
1. ประโยคบอกเล่าที่มี verb to be สามารถทำให้เป็นประโยคคำถามได้โดยการนำ verb to be มาวางไว้หน้าประธาน แล้วใส่เครื่องหมายคำถาม (question mark) ที่ท้ายประโยค

2. ประโยคบอกเล่าที่มี had หรือคำกริยาช่องที่ 2 สามารถทำให้เป็นประโยคคำถามได้โดยนำdid วางไว้หน้าประธาน และกริยาแท้ต้องเปลี่ยนจาก had เป็น have หรือกริยาที่ไม่มี to (Infinitive without to) ตามเดิม แล้วใส่เครื่องหมายคำถาม (question mark) ที่ท้ายประโยค
