Preposition (คำบุพบท)
จากประโยค ต่อไปนี้
ประโยคที่ 1 An apple is the table. (แอปเปิ้ล 1 ผล โต๊ะ)
ประโยคที่ 2 I went to Pattaya friends. (ฉันไปพัทยา เพื่อน)
ประโยคที่ 3 He is the office. (เขา-อยู่/เป็น???- สำนักงาน)
จากสามประโยคข้างต้นจะเห็นว่า เป็นประโยคไม่สมบูรณ์และสื่อสารไม่เข้าใจ แต่ถ้าเราเติม Preposition (คำบุพบท) เข้าไป นอกจากจะทำให้ประโยคสมบูรณ์แล้ว เราสามารถสื่อสารได้ชัดเจนขึ้น
An apple is on the table (แอปเปิ้ล 1 ผล บนโต๊ะ)
I went to Pattaya with friends (ฉันไปพัทยากับเพื่อน)
He is at the office. (เขาอยู่ที่สำนักงาน)
ดังนั้น Preposition (คำบุพบท) เป็นคำซึ่งใช้วางข้างหน้าคำนาม (noun) คำสรรพนาม (pronoun) หรือ คำเสมอนาม (noun equivalent) เพื่อทำให้ประโยคสมบูรณ์และสื่อความหมายชัดเจนยิ่งขึ้นว่า คำเหล่านั้นมีความสัมพันธ์กับคำอื่นๆ อย่างไร
Preposition อาจเป็นคำโดดๆ เช่น in, on, at, under, after, since, with เป็นต้น หรืออาจเป็นกลุ่มคำ (group preposition) เช่น in front of, at the back of เป็นต้น
โดยทั่วไป เราสามารถแบ่ง Preposition เป็น 2 ประเภท
1. บอกเวลา (Time)
2. บอกสถานที่ (Place)
3. บอกลักษณะ (Manner)
4. บอกจุดประสงค์ หรือเหตุผล (Purpose or reason)

• We are going to London at the weekend.

หมายเหตุ เราจะไม่ใช้ in, on, at นำหน้า every, last, next, this, tomorrow และ yesterday เช่น

2. Preposition บอกสถานที่ (Place)
2.1 บอกตำแหน่ง (Position)
in - ข้างใน There is a pretty gift in the box.
It’s in the street.
on - บนสิ่งหนึ่งสิ่งใด A bird is on the roof.
It’s on the road.
behind - ข้างหลัง, เบื้องหลัง A kitten is hiding behind the bush.
in front of - ข้างหน้า The teacher stands in front of the class.
at the back of - ใต้, ข้างล่าง Kath likes to sit at the back of the classroom.
at the corner - มุม Turn left at the corner.
under - ใต้,ข้างล่าง My dog sleeps under the table.
between - ระหว่าง(2สื่อ) There is a little house between the trees.
among - ท่ามกลาง, ในหมู่ Mr. Edward is standing among his friends.
2.2 บอกทิศทางการเคลื่อนไหว (Movement)
across - ข้าม Those boys always swim across the canal.
into - เข้าไปใน She went into the shop.
from - จาก Tom comes from school.
Through - ผ่าน I drove through the tunnel.
up - ขึ้น Move up.
down - ลง Move down.
3. Preposition บอกลักษณะ (Manner)
เช่น You spoke in a loud voice.
He isn’t in mood.
